  • Covers period to about 1895. Childhood at Brighton - sees the “Great Eastern”, schooldays. Hartley Institution, Southampton; Principal, T.W. Shore, the buildings, curriculum, staff, leisure activities. Normal School of Science; its facilities, staff, etc., (C.V. Boys and the slide rule), Frederick Lanchester decides not to take final exam. Finsbury Technical College. Early inventions and patents (radical cursor, isometrograph, pendulum accelerometer). First job. Joins Forward Gas Engine Co., (T.B. Barker); patents pendulum governor for gas engines, agreement with Barker, contacts with Dugald Clerk of Marks and Clerk, patent agents, patent dispute with Crossley Brothers over pendulum governor, agreements with Crossley Brothers on Frederick Lanchester’s starter patent. Visit to the U.S.A., 1892-93 to explore gas engine possibilities; comments on American hotels, Chicago, etc., brief meeting with S.P. Langley. Financial difficulties c. 1893-94.
